Billboard Chart topping Artist Akon has been making waves for Africa starting with his Lighting Africa Project. Now he is taking it to another level with the introduction of his new cryptocurrency Akoin. In a panel at Cannes Lion, the Senegal-descended artist announced that his cryptocurrency would go live in a couple of weeks. It will be used in the 2,000 acres of land he was given by the President of Senegal.
He believes that this will be vital in empowering Africans. This is what he had to say on the matter:
“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down.”
During the panel, the artist also said that there is a possibility of him running for the 2020 United States Presidency. Given what he is doing with the Lighting Africa Project and his City Project in Senegal, the rapper can gain many supporters especially in the African American demographic. Then again, this is just a possibility.
The Akoin is just part of his Greater project of a Smart City in Senegal. If this goes well, the city can be a potential blueprint for the future of many other cities in Africa.
